Facebook, for all its “software first, advertising second” ethos, needs to make money to show wall street it is on the right path. Whether it will succeed or not rests on its software which, in part, tracks user’s internet habits on other sites to more accurately present adverts.

A great post by Vinicius Vacanti on launching an experiment rather than a startup. Looking at something as an experiment gives you the freedom to play, learn, grow and change. An experiment lets you test hypotheses. Ultimately that’s going to allow you to achieve success more than a fixed idea that is, as yet, completely unproven and untested. Derek Sivers expresses a similar opinion in his article Why you need your own company. The url to Sivers’ post is telling - sivers.org/laboratory. Sivers treats his companies as laboratories. Places to try things and see what happens.

But, by thinking of it as a quick experiment, that fear tends to go away. The beautiful thing about experiments is that disproving your hypothesis isn’t thought of as a failure. It’s thought of as progress

Go experiment, treat work as play, build something small and fluid.
